How it all started...
Calvary Baptist Church was built on the foundation of God’s Word and has purposed to be a lighthouse to The Valley, guiding people to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.
In 1935 a group of people met in the home of William Gable. They called the Reverend David Jordon as their first pastor. They grew and moved into the East Athens Community Hall. Shortly thereafter, they moved to the Maney Building on Main Street, where they were incorporated in the state of Pennsylvania as an Independent Baptist Church.
In 1940 the church bought land on Susquehanna Street. A group of men from the church tore down the Greens Landing School House for $101 and used the 13,000 board feet of lumber they salvaged to start their new building.
Soon after a home on Maple Street was purchased to be used for a parsonage.
In 1946 Calvary held a special three day celebration of preaching and music as they celebrated 10 years of service to God. New ministries were added with Dial-a-Devotion and Boys Brigade.
In 1968, the current building on Pine Street was constructed.

Press on through adversity...
In 1972 the Agnes Flood hit Athens, destroying the parsonage and flooding the first floor of the church. A house on Hugh Street was purchased for a new parsonage. All ministries continued, including Awana, during clean up and reconstruction.
In 1974 we purchased the property adjacent to the church on Lily Avenue giving us space for outdoor activities and future expansion.
In 1983, we bought our current parsonage next to the church and continued to make improvements to the church, including a handicap accessible lift and handicap bathroom.
In 2011 Calvary held a three day conference to celebrate ministering to our community for 75 years. All glory, praise and honor goes to the Lord for what has been accomplished. Great is God’s faithfulness.

Where we are headed...
The Lord said that no one knows the day or the hour of His return (Mark 13, et al). He also asked in Luke 18 a question that more to motivate us than it is inquisitive... "when the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on the earth?"
This is our earnest desire: that the Lord find His church faithful when He returns.
