Equip Classes

Calvary Baptist Church offers Equip classes for the purpose of training Christians to minister within local churches. This is one way we are carrying out what Paul describes to the Ephesian church: “And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ,” (Ephesians 4:11-12).

Training men and women to faithfully teach God’s Word is crucial for local church ministry, but is often overlooked. Through the Equip classes, we seek to empower current and future teachers for the sake of Christ’s kingdom. As Paul instructs Timothy in 2 Timothy 2:2, “what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also.”

We are currently offering two different Equip classes:


Biblical Exposition for Preaching and Teaching

2020 Class dates: February 1, March 7, April 4, May 2, June 6, June 27 (note this last one is an updated date)
Class time: 10 AM-Noon (all class dates are Saturday mornings)

Who is this class for?
Men and women who desire to faithfully teach the Bible to others.

What topics will the class cover?
This class will focus on how to build a lesson or sermon from a text of Scripture and preach or teach it faithfully and effectively. Some of the topics covered will include:
• Why Biblical Exposition?
• Using Tools and Building Lessons
• Giving Shape and Purpose to the Message
• Bringing the Message to Life
• Delivering the Message

What is the format of the class?
12 hours of training in six 2-hour sessions. Each session will include review and discussion of the previous reading assignment, teaching on that session’s topic, opportunities for practice and personal feedback, and homework assignments.

Who is teaching the class?
Our lead pastor Mark Cox will be the main teacher, and he has invited guest speakers to teach some of the sessions.

What does it cost?
There is no cost for the class, but if you would like to make a donation to help cover the cost of materials, we would greatly appreciate it.

How do I participate?
Fill out the registration form on this page by January 18th (or as soon as possible if it is past January 18th). Bring your Bible and notetaking supplies to class.


Teaching the Bible to Children

2020 Class dates: February 22, March 14, April 18, May 16, June 20, July 18
Class time: 10 AM-Noon (all class dates are Saturday mornings)

Who is this class for?
All who are called upon to teach the Bible to children, including nursery workers, Sunday School teachers and helpers, Children’s Church teachers and helpers, parents, and grandparents. Psalm 78:4 says “We will not hide [the works of God] from their children, but tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might, and the wonders that he has done.”

What topics will the class cover?

• The “Gospel Day” Trap: Because the Good News is for Church Kids Too
• The Factory-Preset Fourth Grader: Because the Good News Changes Hard Hearts
• The Mom in Queen Esther’s Bedroom: Because the Good News is the Bible’s Theme Song
